Chris asks…

IR filter canon 500d?

Hi
I have a canon 500d with an 18-55mm lens.
im looking to get an IR filter for it. (I have heard that the dont work well with this lens)

could anyone tell me what IR filter would work best with this lens?
and
what lens would be best to upgrade to for an IR filter ?
thanks

rob answers:

Like almost all DSLR cameras your 500D has a filter that blocks infrared from hitting the sensor. The lens used has nothing to do with your camera’s ability to make IR pictures. If you attach an IR filter you can try some very long exposures but don’t expect too much. You might be better off trying what this article suggests: http://www.shutterbug.com/content/faux-infrared

There is a company that will convert your 500D but its expensive.

Lisa asks…

How do I fit a 52mm UV filter on to a Canon 500d’s 18-55 mm lens?? Sorry but im pretty new to this.?

rob answers:

A UV filter protects the lens and reduces some haze.

The correct size for you is 58mm

I found the easiest way to find accessories for any camera is to search for the actual camera and then scroll down and look under accessories and there you will find all filters, lenses, cases, flashes etc. That fit your camera.

58mm UV filter for canon EOS 500D camera 18-55mm lens a good idea?

Very useful or not exactly important purchase?

rob answers:

Useful

Here is how a UV filter saved one of my lenses.

As you can see, the lens hood was of no use, but the UV filter took the hit.

UV filters also keep sticky finger prints off the front element of the lens and reduces the amount of cleaning necessary of the actual lens. Constant cleaning of a lens will eventually damage the special anti-flare and anti-ghosting coatings on the lens

lens & filter recommendation for canon 500D?

Will be travelling to cultural & historical sites as in Forbidden City, Summer Palace etc in Beijing. At the same time, going to the Great Walls of China. I need to rent a lens. Please what kind of zoom lens & if there is space, for a prime lens, what is suitable for such a trip. Also recommendation for filter as well.

rob answers:

Well , historical sites will need wide lens, i would suggest
10-20 sigma

and for get a zoom lens for portrait 70-200 2.8

if u dont want to keep changing lenses , i think 24-105 f4 , or 24-70 2.8 will be great for u

good luck ,

Canon EOS 500D filters PLEASE HELP! X?

Hiya I really need all the help I can get with this.

My other half is into photography and has a Canon EOS 500D…his birthday is coming up and I would really like to buy him some nice accessories for his camera like filters and stuff….. I dont really know alot about filters for cameras and was wondering if anyone could point in the right direction……maybe what type i should buy / what ones have nice effects….also where I could get them…..any answers very much appreciated!!!! Thanks Guys xxxxxx :-)

rob answers:

Filters depend on the lens(es), you need to check the lenses to know what size filters to buy.

If he doesn’t have any circular polarizers, then they would be the obvious choice and much appreciated.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more money, get him going with some cokin filters – get the holder, and perhaps a circular polarizer plus a gradual ND filter, too. Make sure to get the big holder, plus some step up rings to use with several lenses.

Your local camera store would have some of those (but more expensive), and B&H is a highly respected store and website that you can order from without having to worry.
