Jenny asks…

What digital slr camera is best for amateur photographers?

I really want a digital slr camera, but I don’t want to spend a fortune, I’ve been looking at used ones, and refurbished but they’re all so expensive! I’ve been manly looking at getting a canon EOS rebel xs. Is that a decent camera? I currently have a canon regular digital camera and I love it.

rob answers:

With DSLR’s your buying into a system and Canon is far and away the most expensive, closely followed by Nikon.

Pentax, Olympus and Sony have many more features. They may be more expensive initially, but a soon as you start adding lenses, flashguns etc. They work out much cheaper for the same or Higher quality. You finish with a much more useful system for less money.

Things to look for are a bright viewfinder, good build quality, adjustments of everyday things such as EV value, focus point, metering mode etc. Without having to go into a menu. These are basic to using your camera for anything other than ‘point and shoot’.

Pentax and Sony offer image stabilisation in camera, so every lens you fit is image stabilised without a price premium. Pentax in particular have a massive range of older high quality lenses available for very little, all will be image stabilised.

A second hand Pentax DS, which is now 5 years old, would be available at a lower price than a Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel, and is much more of a camera than either of them, it has a genuine pentaprism in the viewfinder which means a brighter image, much better build quality, the same Sony sensor that was used on the Nikon D80. The only downside is the lack of image stabilisation. Like all Pentax DSLR’s it can operate as a ‘focus trap’ which no other make of DSLR can do.

Is the Canon EOS 60D Digital SLR camera compatible with a MacBook Pro?

rob answers:

Hi laceelorayne_13,

Yes, so long as you have the appropriate software for the image formats you create it will be able to process them on the MacBook Pro. If you buy the camera new it will come with software for processing images on Apple and PC compatible systems. Otherwise you can go to the Canon Product support website and download the appropriate software.

Apple has advanced software available in such products as iPhoto11 but you should be able to do basic processing with the standard functions included with the MacBook and the camera.

Hope that helps Goodluck.

I have the nikon d90 and I LOVE it. It takes absolutely brilliant photos, extremely clear and bright. It’s easy to use. Th only down side is it’s expensive, but any good digital slr is going to be. Good luck!

what kind of lens should i get for my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT SLR Camera body?

i just bought Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT SLR Camera on ebay for a really good price, but it didn’t come with a lens. I’m looking for a regular lens to buy, what kind should i get/what is it called?

rob answers:

For beginning SLR photographers, I would recommend the Kit lens which is sold regularly with the camera It’s the 18-55is (IS Stands for image stabalization) The lens should sell for about $100 new, or 50-75% of that used on auction websites…
It’s not a great lens, by any means, but it’s a very good value, and versitile for almost any indoor shooting situation.
I also use canon’s 28-135is, which has a bit more telephoto, and a bit less wide angle. It’s not as inexpensive as the 18-55 kit lens, but it’s an excellent quality lens for a beginner, and it won’t break the bank.

I just got a Sony A330 takes good pics but you really have to know a lot about cameras to be able to really achieve nice pics. The lens that came with it really isn’t that good. Im in the process now of getting a new lens.
