Linda asks…

is the canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR camera good?

well obviously its good, but other reviews? also does it include effects like fish eye & grainy? what other effects does it have? are there any cameras like that one that are better and around the same price or cheaper?

rob answers:

I don’t know how many times we need to go through this here.

The t3i, in case you hadn’t noticed, is a dslr – fully controllable camera, it’s not a gimmick. It’s not loaded with “effects”. These cameras are designed for serious photographers not snappers. They are designed to be under the photographer’s full control for lighting, exposure, shutter speed, ISO and other things.

If it’s effects junk you want buy a cheap point and shoot. If it’s serious photography you want and you’re willing to take the time to learn how to use such a camera the t3i will be excellent.

Which DSLR should I buy? Nikon D5100 vs. canon Rebel T3i?

I’ve been looking to get a DSLR, and out of all the cameras I’ve looked at, the two that I’ve mainly considered are the Nikon D5100 and the canon Rebel T3i. I’m looking to use it for both photography and video, and I’ve heard mixed reviews about the D5100′s ability to take video. Could someone please tell me about the pros/cons of each and which one you think I would be happiest with? Thanks!

P.S. I’m new to photography, so I don’t know what a lot of the technical terms mean.

John asks…

canon t3i vs Panasonic hdc-tm900 Low Light?

i plan to purchase a video/camera in the immediate near future, iv’e been looking / reading reviews, watching sample video of thus two models mention earlier. i have been at it for weeks. I weighted the pros and cons of what i need and will be happy settling for.

the main pro is i need a great low light video camera that looks great at day to. I’ve seen footage of the canon and Panasonic in similar low light environment’s
( i realize a lot of both cameras footage’s have cc and color grading fixes)

con: i find in the panny is it seems like all the day light footage i find of it seem’s rather dark & dull non sharp footage, making if i were going for a cheerful, outdoor, blazing heat of the day, fun like a laundry commercial vibe need more color correcting/grading. and more difficult to achieve natural angelic look

creative features like DOF on the cannon puts me in awe but the cannons low light capabilities makes me worry because i don’t know if its my monitor or not. on all the footage of the competing cameras i cant pick out a single grain of noise on a panny video. but i see the grain easily on the cannon’s video. (i’m using a Sony bravia KDL-32BX300)

so my question is what should i go for? i need a good low light camcorder, that has equally better daylight capabilities, i really cant tell the quality of these two bench-marked from two different sources or people when the source video can have several variable’s like improper settings, or novice users can anyone weigh in to help me out. give me your opinion.

The nikon D5100 is the king of low light in that range! I don’t know why you haven’t considered it.

Lizzie asks…

Canon T3 w/ lenses or T3i?

I have a Canon SX20 bridge camera that does a pretty good job at taking pictures in well lit areas like outdoors and macro, etc. However I want to upgrade to a DSLR so I have a bit more options with changing lenses and getting more higher quality pictures.

I’m torn between the Canon T3 or T3i. Would it be better if I chose the Canon Rebel T3 (since it’s much cheaper) and use different lenses with it such as the 50mm f1.4 II lens to acheive high quality crisp clean pictures? Getting the T3i is kind of impossible for me since its very expensive and the only thing I like about it is that it seems to generally have much better reviews than the T3 and it also has the flip screen.

rob answers:

The lens will make 10x the difference in your pictures than the body. Sure the T3i is better but not by enough to warrant not getting great glass. The 50mm f/1.4 is a great choice as well and will last you a long time. I would always prefer to buy a better lens than a better body. You will notice the difference immediately. You may look at the T2i as well which has almost all the features of the T3i minus wireless flash and the articulating screen mostly yet is a little better than the T3. But either way, make sure you spend your money on the glass. If you don’t care about video, you could pick up a used Canon 50D for cheap (very professional body) and the 50mm f/1.4. It would be difficult to beat that quality.

Joseph asks…

Canon or Nikon for beginners?

So far I have mainly stuck with film cameras for the rugged vintage charm, but I am wanting to venture into digital photography more than I have before. Film is just too expensive and I’d like to transfer my passions a little. I am looking into the Canon EOS Rebel T3i and the Nikon D5100. I have heard a lot of wonderful things about both, but I’m an indecisive girl! So, I’ve come to you all. I have read numerous reviews and side by side comparisons, but I haven’t quite come to any conclusions. I know that I will be doing some portraits as well as nature. Advice? Answers? Votes? Suggestions? Thanks in advance! muah!

rob answers:

Well, out of the first three answers we have one for canon, one for nikon, and one for cannon- a military weapon

now then, what it really comes down to between the two is how you feel using them. What you want to shoot depends on the lens you choose, not the camera itself.

Choose based on what feels best to you, which one is easier for you to handle, which one feels good, and which one has the features you want
