Linda asks…

What should be my second lens for a Canon Rebel XS?

Im getting my first SLR this month and its the Canon XS. It comes with a 18-55 mm Lens and I hear thats not the greatest of all lenses. Im mainly going to be taking pictures of structures and landscapes mostly. What lens should I get??

rob answers:

I recommendCanon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM SLR Lens.
I recently bought this lens, and even though I knew the mathematics, the increase in field-of-view it provides over the 17-85mm IS still surprised me when I first looked through that lens. I’m in the process of selling a house, and this lens is great to take the indoor pictures for the various ads (although it’s also easy to make every room look like a deep tunnel — composition gets a little trickier).

So far the imaging qualities seem to be better than any other lens I own (I don’t have canon L-glass). The construction is also quite good — on par with the 17-85mm IS, I’d say. Size and weight are also similar to the 17-85, which makes it a great match for a 20D camera.

This lens’ weakest feature is it’s maximum aperture: f/3.5 at the wide end is not horrible, but I always long for faster optics.

Not cheap, but it seems superior to the alternatives in its class.

Is there a problem with my Canon Rebel XS autofocus?

I bought a new canon rebel xs /1000d SLR camera today. I noticed that when I am looking with my eye up to the camera, when it focuses on something the image is still slightly blurry. However the final image on preview mode looks fine. It also focuses perfectly through live view mode. Is this normal? It’s just I noticed on my old Nikon d40 it focused to a slightly more clear image through the lens.
Cheers.

rob answers:

No it is not a problem with the camera. Next to the viewfinder there will be a little wheel or adjustment lever. This is the diopter and is used to adjust the viewfinder to your eyes. Just move this up or down until what you see through the viewfinder is clear.

Donald asks…

Should I, and for how long, should I charge my Canon Rebel XS battery?

I just bought my Canon Rebel XS and I have read the manual. But before I use it, I want to make sure that I need to charge the battery. Does it come ready to use, or do I need to charge it? If I do need to charge the battery, how long should I do it for, since it is the first time?

rob answers:

The manual should cover that. In fact it is probably right in the beginning. You should charge it, and the charger should have an indicator light telling you when it is fully charged.

Lisa asks…

Whats a better camera the Nikon D60 or the Canon Rebel XS?

The Canon Rebel XS comes with a 18-55mm Lens and a Canon 75-300mm Telephoto EF Zoom Lens f/4.0-f/32 and costs $604.98

The Nikon D60 comes with a 18-55mm Lens and a SanDisk 4GB Ultra II SDHC Card and costs $617.98

Which is a better camera?
Which is the better deal?

rob answers:

Neither. Both are excellent cameras made by the two camera companies that make the cameras that the pros use.

Which one you choose will have to do with which fits your hands the best or which one is easiest to use when making changes in the cameras menu.

You can get a lot more bang for the buck if you spend $500 on the Nikon D40 with both a 18-55 mm and 55-200 mm VR.

No matter which camera you buy, you will be replacing it in three to five years due to advances it technology, but the lenses will last for decades.

John asks…

Should I go for the Canon Rebel XS or the Nikon D60?

I found 2 deals on the cameras, the Canon Rebel XS for $449 on a trusty reliable site that i have shopped for years, and a Nikon D60 for $549 at a store, which one is better out of the 2, and im also looking at getting the most out of it, not just price, please help me out. There also just regular kits with with 1 lense. Thanks.

rob answers:

It is a tough call, as you have already discovered. Both are very good cameras, with very comparable features. I think in general the existing Nikon owners will feel comfortable recommending the D60, and existing Canon owners (me me) would recommend the XS.

You may want to vist a store and hold them both if you haven’t done that already. When features are this close, how the camera feels in your hands might be the determining factor.
