Carol asks…

Is it worth the extra money for the Canon Rebel XSi instead of the XS?

I know it’s a vague question, but I’m having a hard time choosing. I’ve already got my mind set on a certain lens but I can’t decide on a body.

rob answers:

The Canon EOS Rebel XS is the “little brother” of the Canon EOS Rebel XSi which means they are both almost the same camera, but the XSi has more to offer than the XS. Perhaps consider basing your buying decision on how serious you will be taking up digital SLR photography. If you firmly believe that you will take digital SLR photography very seriously in the long run and want a solid entry-level digital SLR camera, then the Canon XSi may be a better choice for you.
If price is your main concern and you are only looking for Canon’s bottom entry-level digital SLR model, then the current price of the Canon XS kit is quite worthy of a purchase consideration.

here are the differences between the XS and the XSi:
- The XSi has more megapixels at 12.2MP while the XS is 10.1MP.
- For JPEG, the XSi can continuously shoot at 3.5 fps while the XS can do 3.0 fps. But for RAW, the XSi is much better at 3.5 fps while the XS can only do 1.5 fps.
- The LCD monitor of the XSi measures 3.0 inches while the XS has a smaller screen at 2.5 inches.
- The XSi has a 9-point AF system while the XS has only a 7-point.
- The XSi has Spot metering while the XS does not. Both have Evaluative, Partial, and Center-weighted metering, however.
- The XSi RAW is 14-bit while the XS RAW is 12-bit.
- XSi has Highlight Tone Priority while XS does not.
- The viewfinder of the XSi provides 0.87x magnification while the XS
- The XSi can utilize the RC-1 or the RC-5 wireless remote shutter release, but the XS is not compatible with either so you won’t be able to use a wireless remote release.
- You cannot buy the XS without the kit lens.

Please help ? What settings should I put my Canon Rebel XSi on for a musical?

I want my dad to take pictures of my musical he’s watching today, and no flash is allowed. What settings do I put the camera on for awesome pictures? For the most part, the stage lighting is pretty good, but i want the pictures to be nice and clear. :) Please help?

How well does your father know how to use a fully adjustable camera?

For the best shots, with no blur caused by camera or actor movement, you will have to jack the ISO up to as high as it will go and shoot at shutter speeds of over 1/250th second (1/125th if your dad is familiar with using your camera). By using the lens with the aperture wide open, the chances if having the highest shutter speed for the lighting in enhanced. To so this he will want the camera set to the aperture priority mode

Remember to set the cameras white balance to incandescent to assure good colour balance.

I am sure you have all the stories about noisy photos when shot at high ISO’s, but think of it this way. Would you rather have crisp photos of your performance with NO blur (which can be reduced with special programs) or a whole lot of photos that so great colour but are all blurred because there is camera or subject movement

Can someone help me upload photos from my Canon Rebel XSI to my computer?

I did it once last night and now my computer isn’t even recognizing that the camera is connected. I tried charging the battery and didn’t change any settings, but nothing has worked. I’m on Windows XP. My usb ports are working because I’ve been able to upload other things. I already installed all the programs that came with my camera onto my computer. So yeah, there’s all the info please help if you can because I am way too frustrated.

If I were you, I would try to get support from Cannon. I have had the same problem and don’t know what to do either. I do know that their support will be needed. Good luck.

Jenny asks…

How can I take pictures through my LCD screen on my EOS Canon Rebel XSi?

I can look throw the piece above the screen and take the picture but I cannot find the setting to change it to view on the screen?

rob answers:

Read the manual, it is there for a reason.
If you lost it, download an electronic version of it, all major manufacturers let you do that.

Everybody needs to read their manual several times.
Read it once, then take some photos. Read it again, and practice what you learned.
Read it again, you’ll understand much more this time, then go experiment.

Go to your local library and get books on photography, you’ll be thankful you did.

Don’t just hope there is one setting that magically takes great photos…….. YOU need to do the work, and YOU need to start by learning about it first.

When you’re done reading, hopefully you’re done wanting to use your LCD screen. You really are much better off with your viewfinder.

George asks…

I have a Canon Rebel XSI. What is the best lens I can get for under 400 dollars?

Basically the type of photography I am going for will be primarily indoor shots (classroom settings and occasionally low-lighted rooms). However I will also be photographing sports like tennis and soccer. I did take a look at the Canon F/4 which was around 600. Would anyone recommend that? It seemed to pool the best reviews but didn’t seem to do so well with indoor shots :(

rob answers:

What do you want to photograph?

The 85mm f/1.8

60mm f/2.8 Macro

50mm f/1.4

20mm f/2.8

Keep in mind that all of the above are superb lenses for $400. (There are literally thousands of choices of lenses for $400… Especially poor zooms).

***

I have no idea which lens the Canon F/4 is.

For inside shots the Canon 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 is hard to beat.

For sports shots your choices are quite meager for $400. Actually, I can’t think of one. Only a poor zoom would be in that range.
